Cyprus and Israel expand cooperation on Research & Innovation

Entities from Cyprus and Israel are invited to establish joint research projects and submit proposals in the framework of a programme named “Interstate Cooperation”, launched by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation.

According to the foundation, entities from both countries are requested to cooperate on mutual research projects to improve new or substantially developed products, services and methods of production of high added value with a view to commercial exploitation.

“The program provides incentives for business cooperation between Cyprus and Israel. The exchange of know-how with Israel, one of the most technologically advanced countries that traditionally distinguishes itself in the fields of research and innovation, is expected to contribute to creating a competitive business ecosystem in Cyprus, upgrading to a significant extent the products and services available in the domestic and international markets” Vassilis Tsakalos, Director General of the Foundation, said.

The budget allocated for the invitation on Cyprus’ part is €500,000 and the maximum funding for each Cypriot cooperation network is €100,000.

Research and Innovation in Cyprus

Cyprus had been taken significant steps towards the upgrading of research activities during the last two decades.

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus, has established a foundation in 1996 with the aim of coordination, support and funding of research and innovation activities in Cyprus, named The Research Promotion Foundation (RPF).

The foundation operates as a non-governmental institution, to serve as the national organisation for the promotion of scientific and technological research in Cyprus. The Foundation’s resources are derived mostly from the Government but also from the Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development of the EU for specific activities.

According to RPF website, the Foundation has funded over 1200 research projects so far and expanded the participation of Cyprus in major European Research Programmes, such as the Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development as well as the COST and EUREKA Programmes.
